Lost and Found – Luggage losing increases

Shortly after delayed flights, luggage-losing is one of the most annoying things while traveling. The biggest part of all 2.25 billion transportet suitcases and bags a year are reaching there owners (nearly 98%). But luggage losing is still daily business on airports and train stations. In the "Baggage Report 2008" the IT corporation "Sita" - operator of the full automatic luggage searching system WorldTracer - talks about 42.2 million lost or misrouted luggage in 2007. Most of them - more then 40 million - where reroutet and arrived at there correct destinations. Only in europe the count increased between 2004 and 2007 be 21% (from 13.7 from 1.000 to 16.6 from 1000) and the forecast shows increasing numbers. A pro prognosis from "Sita" talks from more then 50 million luggage pieces in 2011. As reasons for this rise they name higher passanger numbers, shorter replacement periods and higher safety regulations.

How I can protect me from luggage losing?

Statistics about misrouted luggage are difficult to get... not many airports or airlines publish them. One reason is that airlines and airports are at variance who is responsible for the lost. No one want's to be a unreliable transporter. With help of the IT corporation "Sita" - operator of the full automatic luggage searching system WorldTracer - we know that nearly 50% get lost while reloading luggage between two airplanes. To provide luggage losing it is recommended to choose non-stop flights or try to have a stop in airports which are designed for reloading (for example the Frankfurt Airport loses only 2-4 from 1.000 luggage pieces). You can find online some reports from the AEA (Association of European Airlines) with informations about many airlines. There you can read which one are more reliable then others. This does not protect 100% again luggage losing. But you can use luggage tags with your full name and adress (outside and inside your luggage) to rise your chance to get back lost suitcases and bags in a short time.

What is the correct way after luggage losing?

Every year more then 42 million people all over the world are waiting useless for there luggage. After several minutes of waiting they know "My suitcase is lost". But what you have to do in this case? Consumer protection recommend to announce the lost at the Lost-and-Found- or Baggage-Claim-desk and fill out the Property Irregularity Report (PIR). During the agreement of Montreal in June 28th 2004 a passanger has rights to get compensations from airlines, if he suffer a loss as a consequence of a delayed flight or lost luggage. But you have only 7 days to announce it in case of lost or damaged luggage and 21 days in case of delayed delivered luggage. the announcement has to be in written form. The maximum value of compensation depents on a system which is defined in the agreement of Montreal too. It is recalculated every day and is normaly between 1.100 and 1.200 Euro. If your luggage is more expensive or valuable you should declare it at the Check-In. So your chance to get the real value in case of luggage losing is much higher. Is the reason of your travel a all-inclusive tour, then the tour operator is responsible for your luggage. You can reduce the price for the day where you don't have your luggage for circa 20%. Normaly all tour operators have regulations for such cases.

Tipps for the luggage auction

Everyone who wants to feel the unique atmosphere during a luggage auction and hear the sound of the falling hammer at the end of a bidding, should calculate much more time before the real auction. To resist the "bidding fever" and check which one of the offered pieces is a small treasure, you should arrive 2 hours before. So you have time to check the luggage (maybe it is damaged), the real price for a suitcase or bag if you would buy it new and make a pre-selection which one is more interesting then others. Good to know: all luggage pieces will be opened be the duty or the airlines to remove cash and dangerous, illegal or baleful goods. Every auction has there own terms, which are published at the location. There you can find the provision for the auctioneer too, which you have to pay with your bidding price. You should make a maximum price for your own to prevent from the "bidding fever" (many bidder can rease the price very fast) and keep cool during the bidding process. In the terms of the auction normaly you can find a passage that there is no customer complaint or replacement, so a wrong bidding can be very angry.

How does a luggage auctions works?

Everyone who want's to take part of an auction, has to register and get's a label with a number on it which you can hold to place a bid. The auctioneer calls one after one all luggage pieces and declares the minimum bidding price. You can place a bid be raising your label and if no one else wants to place a bidding order the auctioneer close the actual bidding with a counting of 3. The winner has to pay immediately in cash.
